Seek Help For An IRS Audit, Don’t Panic

Say you get one of those notices that inform you that your business is one of those lined up for IRS audits? So what’s the first thing that you will do? Panic, and let it ruin the rest of your day? Well you don’t need to touch the red button and ask for help from long lost friends and seek refuge somewhere south of the country.

Consider audits as normal procedures. And though you and your business have been selected for one of those inconvenient audits, this does not mean that the government agency is out to pin you down. And this does not mean too that your competitor is envious and wants you to go down.

These scenarios aren’t always applicable. There must be some reasons why your business is on the list, perhaps a computer has randomly selected your business or your business has been singled out for test compliance in your niche industry.

When you receive the note, just relax and heed some of these suggestions on how to survive the day. At the end of the day, the IRS representatives will inform you why in the first place your business was pre-selected.

Here is an important thing to remember when you are under audits; make sure that you talk to the representative and argue your case that you were entitled to any credits and even deductions. In fact, it is an important suggestion to note that you need to tell the representative that you have reported all income and also report the credits and exemptions that you have received.

As much as possible, it is also suggested that you don’t host the IRS in your home. If you have the means, then make sure that a tax lawyer handles your concerns. Always make sure that you consult a professional before hosting the IRS auditor in your business.  Having an accountant or tax attorney is the best way to make sure that everything will work as smoothly as possible.

If you have been expecting the auditor, make sure that all records are within your reach. Another suggestion to follow is not to answer unless you are being asked on something.  It is not suggested to provide the auditor with other financial documents he doesn’t need.

Here is a rule that you don’t want to break: don’t bring out records from the years previous to those being audited. Any mistakes found could lead to more expenses even if it does not concern the past 5 years. And of course, you can never go wrong by doing some form of research on tax issues. Use publications and materials provided for by the IRS. Remember, a visit from a representative of IRS for IRS audits will not sting if you are ready, calm and well-read.
